Pipe boot and vent leaks
Cracked rubber collars around pipes
A chimney can let water in without the roof being involved at all. A cracked crown, a missing cap, spalled brick or eroded mortar joints all admit water into the stack, where it travels down and appears inside looking exactly like a roof leak. Because the symptom is identical, chimneys are a common source of leaks that have been repaired at roof level more than once without success.
Galena Park is close enough to the Gulf to take the full force of tropical systems, and that is the storm profile that sets everything else. Hurricane wind is sustained for hours rather than gusting, which does something different to a roof — it works shingle tabs loose over an extended period and drives rain horizontally under courses that would shed any normal downpour. Then the heat and humidity do the slow damage. Roofs across Harris County run hot for most of the year, which ages the shingle and hardens every rubber and sealant component on it, and the humidity means that anything which gets wet inside the roof structure stays wet. A small leak here does considerably more damage over the same period than the same leak would further north, and mould becomes a problem much sooner.
Galena Park has a population of about 10,352, and the housing stock here sets the pattern for what fails first on a roof.
Both present almost identically. Flashing leaks usually show at ceiling level where the stack passes through; masonry leaks often show lower, on the breast itself, and worsen with wind-driven rain from a particular direction. Checking both before working on either saves repeating the job.
More so, arguably. An open flue on a disused stack takes rain straight into the structure with nothing drawing it back out, so the masonry stays wet and deteriorates faster than one in use.
